Aquaculture is the breeding, rearing and harvesting of fish, shellfish, algae and other organisms, in coastal waters or in tanks on land. It is the world’s fastest-growing food-producing sector and already supplies over half the fish people eat.
In Saudi Arabia, aquaculture began in the early 1980s with support from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, which led to the Jeddah fish farming centre, now a fisheries research centre.
Today the sector is a national priority for food security. Partnerships between government and the private sector are attracting investment into aquaculture projects and creating jobs for Saudis.
