Geothermal energy explained

Geothermal energy is heat stored within the earth’s crust. The name comes from the Greek words for earth and heat. Because the earth keeps producing heat, it is a renewable source.

People have used geothermal heat for bathing, cooking and warming homes for thousands of years. Today, underground reservoirs of steam and hot water also generate electricity, heat and cool buildings through district systems, and warm greenhouses.

Its biggest advantage is consistency: unlike solar and wind, geothermal heat is available day and night in every season, making it a strong partner for other renewables.
